Mozilla unleashes Firefox 2.0 final test code
Firefox RC2 follows the RC1 release by nearly two weeks and is primarily a bug fix that improves the stability of the browser ahead of its full general availability release.
One of the key areas of improvement in FF RC2 is extension compatibility. At press time, it is still showing at least 60 popular extensions that do not yet work on Firefox 2.0. Though that number may seem high, Mozilla developers now claim that over 680 extensions currently are compatible with Firefox 2.0. Developers continue to make changes that will make more of them compatible with FF2. But Firefox 2.0 still isn’t quite ready for public consumption.
Firefox RC2 also builds on a pretty established feature set but will include a number cool features including toolbar buttons which now glow when you hover over them, predictive search text entry, user alerts for sites with addable search engines, close tab buttons on each tab, scrollable tabs, inline spell checking and an add-on manager for managing extensions and themes. Furthermore Javascript has been updated to version 1.7, there’s a new Windows installer based on the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System and built in a session restore feature (a popular third party add-in) which restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms and in-progress downloads from the last user session. A new shortcut will also keep a list of recently closed tabs and let users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.
You can download Firefox 2 Release Candidate 2 for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux in more than 40 languages.
