Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 Available for Download
Mozilla has announced that the Beta 1 release of its Firefox 2.0 web browser is now available for download.
Firefox 2 Beta 1 is a developer preview release of our next generation Firefox browser and it is being made available for testing purposes only. Firefox 2 Beta 1 is intended for web application developers and our testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.x should not use Firefox 2 Beta 1 and expect all of their extensions and plugins to work properly.
The new browser includes phishing protection to prevent users being fooled by fake websites, the ability to re-open tabs that have been closed by accident and better support for RSS feeds.
Bookmarks will now feature micro-summaries to provide a quick précis of frequently changing web pages enabling users to quickly see which pages have been updated.
Bookmark management has taken a positive twist with the introduction of Microsummaries. The organisation describes these as: “Regularly updated, succinct compilations of the most important information on webpages. Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated as new information becomes available.”
Firefox adds a built-in RSS and XML feed-viewing capability, which works like the Feedview extension available for earlier versions of Firefox and a similar feature in IE7.
This new RSS and XML feed preview functionality creates a newspaperlike presentation of any RSS or XML feed link you click.
Although it’s a small feature, Firefox 2.0’s new inline spell checker will be highly appreciated by bloggers, forum posters and anyone who types into Web-based text fields and sometimes makes typos and spelling mistakes. The feature works almost exactly like Microsoft Word’s spell checking, and you can add a list of custom spellings for proper names and terms that aren’t in dictionaries.
